Why don't I see all my order, customer, or draft order tags in filters?

When you filter orders, customers, or draft orders by tag, Metafields Guru loads the list of available tags directly from Shopify. If your store has more than 250 tags for one of these resources, only part of them appears in the list, and the filter shows a note like this:

Due to Shopify API limits, only the most popular 250 tags are listed. If your tag isn't here, enter it manually.

This is a limitation of the Shopify API, not of the app - and it's easy to work around.

Why this happens

Shopify exposes store-wide tag lists through the Shop object of the Admin GraphQL API:

ResourceShopify API fieldWhat you get
OrdersShop.orderTagsup to 250 tags, the most popular first
CustomersShop.customerTagsup to 250 tags (the first 250 Shopify returns)
Draft ordersShop.draftOrderTagsup to 250 tags (the first 250 Shopify returns)

Unlike most Shopify lists, these fields don't support pagination: there's no way to request "the next 250 tags". A single request of up to 250 tags is all Shopify returns, so no app can load the complete list this way.

To make the most of it, for orders Metafields Guru asks Shopify to sort tags by popularity (ShopTagSort.POPULAR), so the tags you use most often are the ones listed. Shopify doesn't offer any sorting for customer and draft order tags, so for them you get whichever 250 tags Shopify returns first.

Product and blog post tags are not affected

Product tags and blog post tags are loaded through different Shopify APIs that do support loading the full list, so all of them are always shown.

How to filter by a tag that isn't listed

The tag list is only a shortcut - the filter itself works with any tag that exists in your store.

  1. Open the tag filter for orders, customers, or draft orders.
  2. In the info banner at the top of the list, type the tag into the Custom tag field.
  3. Click Add or press Enter.

The tag is applied just like one picked from the list, and stays visible in the list (checked) so you can remove it later.

Examples

  • Your store has 1,200 order tags, and you need orders tagged wholesale-2023, which is rarely used and therefore not among the 250 most popular. Type wholesale-2023 into the Custom tag field and click Add.
  • In the simple filter you can select several tags at once: pick vip from the list, then add imported-from-magento manually - orders with either tag will match.
Type the tag exactly

Enter the tag the same way it appears in your Shopify admin (for example, on the order page). A tag with a typo won't match anything, and the filter will return no results.
